Simple Drills to Improve Basketball Dribbling Skills
Basketball is a fun and competitive sport and a great way to get some exercise. Although basketball is a team sport, having a solid foundation of skills is essential to becoming a good team player. One of the most important skills in basketball is dribbling. The better dribbling skills a player has, the better chance they have to either get a good shot for themselves or to get a teammate a better shot. Here are a few dribbling drills players can do on their own to hone their skills:
- Behind-the-back dribble – Players should dribble the ball back-and-forth from one hand to the other behind their back. As they become more confident, they can increase the speed of the dribble. This move will allow players to change direction quickly on an over-aggressive defender without putting the ball at risk of being stolen.
- Crossover dribble – Players should start off dribbling the ball with one hand while moving in the same direction and then quickly dribble to the opposite hand while changing the direction they’re moving to the opposite side as well. This dribble is most often used to get by a defender and either drive to the basket or to create space for a pull-up jumper.
- Hesitation dribble – Players should dribble while running with some momentum to a designated spot where a defender would be. They need to then slow down their momentum and lift up their head as if they were about to pull up for a shot, the goal is to get the defender to step up in an effort to block the shot, once the defender has committed to the fake, the player should change pace and dribble quickly past the defender while they are out of their stance.
