How to Sharpen Cutlery at Your Apartment Near The Villages

Contrary to popular belief, a dull kitchen knife is often more dangerous than a sharp one. Dull knives are more likely to slip while you’re using them, and require more force to use. So, you should always make sure to keep your knives well-sharpened. Having dull blades professionally sharpened can be expensive, but keeping your knives regularly honed can help you keep a blade’s edge sharp for years without having to purchase a replacement.

Here are a few steps you can take to hone your own knives at your apartment near The Villages:

  • Purchase a honing steel, which can be found at any store that sells kitchen utensils. Honing steels are metal rods with a slightly rough texture and a handle made of wood or plastic. Try to avoid honing steels that are too rough, as they can wear away your knives more quickly.

  • When honing your blade, always maintain the sharp end of the knife facing away from you, and work over a counter or table for safety. When sharpening the blade, place the knife on the steel so that it forms a “T” shape and adjust the knife so that its cutting edge is flat against the honing surface.

  • Pull the knife across the honing steel from base to tip approximately 5 times, at an angle of around 20-35 degrees. You should be able to feel when the knife is sliding smoothly and no longer needs sharpening. Repeat the process if your knife needs honing on the other side, and enjoy your newly honed blade.
