Rental Walk-Through Checklist
Finding a new rental can feel like a mad dash. However, once you’ve managed to narrow down your options, gotten a feel for the community, and signed on the dotted line, this race will slowly but surely become a leisurely jog as you cross your T’s and dot your I’s for move-in day. As you prep for the move, one of the best things that you can do is establish a checklist for your rental walk-through. Not sure what this is? Stay tuned as we cue you into the importance of this list.
What is a Rental Walk-Through Checklist?
Before you move your things into your apartment, it’s important to note the rental property’s condition—checking for extreme damage that goes beyond what’s typically expected from a rented flat. By documenting the previous damage, you can ensure your security deposit is returned in whole without the fear of being considered “at fault” for any damage that wasn’t yours.
Things to Include in Your Checklist
Most rental properties will already have a walk-through checklist available, making your life and your landlord’s life easier. To ensure you’ve thoroughly checked your new place for damage, make sure that you follow a checklist that includes a “condition on arrival” section for every room in your rental, specifying the following areas in those rooms:
- All surfaces including flooring, counters, cabinets, walls, ceiling, etc.
- Lighting fixtures
- Appliances (bathroom and kitchen)
The nit-pickier you are, the better. Take your time when looking through the rooms, bring any damage to your landlord’s attention, note the damage so it’s recorded, have both parties sign the document, and keep a copy for future reference.
